Gail's Vision for Lone Star College System
Over the next ten to fifteen years, students
will be more and more likely to take advantage of courses
through their local community college. The tuition costs and
associated costs of living away from home are continuing to
rise to unprecedented levels, precluding many students from
considering more distant universities. The 10% rule under
which most universities operate means that students from
high performance high schools will not be able to earn
entrance to these universities unless they are in the top
10% of their high schools; however, attendance at a
community college like Lone Star grants them automatic
entrance if their grades are acceptable. Lone Star Community
College covers an area which currently has almost 1.2 million
residents and is predicted to grow rapidly in the near
future. The growth of the community and financial necessity
will accelerate the need for more students to take their
lower level courses at Lone Star College.

Because of all these factors, LSCS expects to grow by almost
50% in the next seven (7) years. In order to accommodate
this growth, LSCS must have buildings to house the
professors. Growth in numbers of students requires growth in
numbers of professors and educational space. The current
growth rate has already outstripped expectations and is
ahead of the expected growth rate by two (2) years.
The area covered by LSCS is also in need of institutions
teaching junior and senior level courses, granting 4-year
degrees and Master's level degrees. LSCS hopes to
coordinated another University Center somewhere in the south
and western part of the district in the near future which
will be similar to the trendsetting University Center in The
Woodlands.
The community has reason to be proud of what the Lone Star
College System has already accomplished and should be
enthusiastic about the future of LSCS and what it has done and is
continuing to do for the residents of the district. I am
excited to live in the LSCS district and look forward to
being a part of its huge future development. I will bring
fiscal conservative principles to bear on the expenditures
of funds yet making sure the needs of the students and the
community are met. I look forward to serving our community
by serving on the Board of Trustees of the Lone Star
Community College.
